4th grade students had the exciting opportunity this year to take part in creating a collaborative work of art for a public art show featured at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. The art exhibit will be free to view from April 1 – May 15, 2022.
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site preserves the legacy of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, biographer, historian, folk singer and social activist, Carl Sandburg. Sandburg wrote millions of words reflecting on the American experience of the 20th century. As a father of three, he also wrote imaginative, zany, and fantastical children’s stories, called “Rootabaga Stories.”
Carl Sandburg’s “Rootabaga Stories”, considered American fairy tales, were first published in 1922 and celebrate 100 years of entertaining readers of all ages this year. The theme of the art exhibit, “Ambition”, is from one of these stories. Each student was challenged to think about what an ambition they would like to pursue and to become a “visual speaker” by illustrating that ambition onto a foam printing plate. They learned the art medium of printmaking, using ink and brayers to make multiple prints of their illustration including on a cloth canvas shared by each 4th grade class.
