Dear Junaluska families,

I am very honored to serve as principal of Junaluska Elementary School for the 2017-2018 school year.  Summer always brings about the excitement of preparing for a brand-new school year with all the new faces of our kindergarten students and the familiar faces of our first – fifth grade students.  We are the mighty Junaluska Eagles and our school is one where every student is a winner through a program of excellence.  Junaluska is a K-5 school with an enrollment of approximately 430-440 students.

Last year was a great year with many new staff members and students joining us from Central Elementary School.  We enjoyed each other so much and made great memories throughout the year.  We are fortunate this year to have the added 50% position of assistant principal.  Mrs. Lisa Thompson, will occupy the position of 50% assistant principal and 50% lead teacher for grades 3-5.  Ms. Susan DelBene will occupy the position of 50% lead teacher for grades K-2 and 50% Title I Teacher.  This year we are ready and prepared to begin our journey together again.

We pride ourselves in being a school where students are excited about coming to school each day to study and thrive in a family atmosphere.  Our staff works and plans together well while challenging each other to be innovative and energetic. This philosophy promotes new ideas and opportunities for students.  Thank you for trusting us to educate your child.  Our goal is to see that every child succeeds and is provided the best educational environment while maintaining your valued support.

Being in school and arriving on time every day means your child won’t miss our planned learning experiences.  Please try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours.  Absences should only be for days when he/she is sick or for family emergencies.  We miss our students when they are away from school.

This year we will continue our “Eagle Club” for grades 2-5, as we saw both academic and social growth through these incentives last school year.  Participation in the quarterly activities took both hard work and self-discipline on the part of our students to achieve.  We will also continue our Science Club and our “Girls on the Run” organization.

We are excited about recent community efforts to assist our school.  Faith Community Church members conducted a “Day of Service” at Junaluska Elementary on August 19, 2017 to pressure wash sidewalks and benches, weed the flowerbeds, and trim shrubbery.

An organization visiting the Junaluska area during the fall of 2015 donated a children’s book for each student in our school to take home.  This excitement did not end with this event.  Throughout the 2015-16 and 2016-2017 school years, members of the group continued to purchase wonderful classroom reading books for our 3rd-5th grade classrooms.  The total of brand-new books for our classrooms is well over 3,000 books.  This number does not count the number of books given to each student to take home during the fall of 2015.  The wonderful news is this group is coming back to visit our school on Tuesday, September 5.  We welcome them to our school while they read to each classroom in grades 1-5.

We are continuing our technology journey to have Chromebooks and iPads in each classroom.  Early during the fall of 2017, we should have a one-to-one student/Chromebook match in grades 3-5.

We value our parents, volunteers, and P.T. A.  Please feel free to become involved in volunteer opportunities at our school.  We welcome you to our school and are delighted to work with your children each day!
