Our math instruction is designed to help students understand the foundation of mathematics. We do not want them to just learn an algorithm or procedure to solve problems. We want them to be able to conceptualize the problem and solve it with ease because they have a deep understanding of the mathematical concept.
Math Fluency is always important. We play math games at each grade level to help students develop fact fluency. We encourage parents to play these games at home as well as encourage their children to practice fact fluency at home. We invite parents to partner with us in developing fluent mathematicians.
Students need to understand and be able to explain how they solve problems. We encourage students to write about how they solve math problems and to show concrete and visual representations of their thinking. We encourage student partnerships and sharing of mathematical thinking giving students opportunities to discuss and build deep understanding of concepts.
We use the Investigations math program and the Unpacking Documents from the Common Core Standards to guide our math instruction at each grade level.
